Feature – Biopic
Based on Deng Atem’s memoir Jumping Over the Ram, Child Soldier is an emotional journey of identity, survival and homecoming.
Thrust into war as an eight-year-old, Deng’s one goal was to become a soldier, get a gun and return home to protect his family’s cows.
Along the way, he walked hundreds of mile through the jungle with a shoe on one foot, the other wrapped in cloth. Crossed rivers, swamps and a desert. Survived animal attacks, gun battles, dehydration and disease while men older than he fell dead around him. Was sent to school for an education where they secretly trained the students to be soldiers. Made his way to a refugee camp where he met two young, white reporters who opened his eyes to the bigger world around him. Became one of the first “Lost Boys of Sudan” to come to the United States.
Upon his return home 31 years later, he found much had remained unchanged. As Deng grapples with the hard realities of his past and painful truths about his homeland, he finds solace in his family, the community he left behind and the rhythm of village life.
And while he did not reach that initial goal nor is able reclaim the youth he lost, he still found his way home. Back to the people he loved.
The heartbreak of BEASTS OF NO NATION meets the humanity of FORREST GUMP.
